Whether this is a design decision or the result of releasing Finale 2006 before problems in its MIDI implementation had been solved, it imposes an "either or" choice on all users - and severe limitations on those users with large studios and extensive sample libraries.

However it imposes other limitations as Finale has only 4 virtual outputs for interapplication MIDI and thus cannot address more than 64 Channels.Īnother problem is that Finale 2006 appears unable to play back plug ins and external devices at the same time - a feat accomplished by every commercially available sequencing program that provides for synth and sampler plugins. This has, so far, completely eliminated prolems playing back external MIDI devices.

set Finale Output 1 to Gigastudio Port 1. (MIDI Patchbay reads the configuration in Audio MIDI Setup and will have a list of available output devices) - e.g. Create a configuration in MIDI Patchbay that connects the Finale Output to the desired external device. Enable Interapplication MIDI in Finale's MIDI Setup Dialog box and set Finale's outputs so that whichever port you want to address an external MIDI device during playback is set to one of Finale's virtual outputs - e.g Channels 1- 16 set to Finale Output 1.ģ. Obtain the shareware program MIDI Patchbay from Ģ. If other Finale users are experiencing similar probles a temporary workaround is available:ġ.

This problem occurs when Finale 2006 attempts to address directly the MIDI Devices represented in Audio MIDI Setup. In my short experience with Finale 2006 (OSX version) running Finale 2006 on my system (dual processor 2.5Ghz Powermac/5 GB RAM/MOTU MIDI Time Piece AV MIDI interface/MOTU 2408 Mk 3 audio interface) OS 10.4.2) I have found that MIDI playback of external MIDI devices is highly unreliable - consistently resulting in stuck and missing notes.
